AIPAC, a pro-Israel lobby organization, congratulated Christian Menefee for his win over Al Green of congressional district 18 in a tweet, citing Al Green’s criticisms of Israel, leading to confusion on where the newly elected congressman stands on Palestine.
Congressman Al Green has a pro-Palestinian record, including his sponsoring of the Block the Bombs and the Nakba recognition resolutions and affirming the right of a Palestinian state to exist—alongside an Israeli one.
There is no record of Menefee receiving funding from AIPAC, but his cryptocurrency donors have people second-guessing where else he receives donations from and if all his money is “clean”.
Stand With Crypto gave Christian Menefee a rating of “A” for his support of the industry, and Menefee even completed their Stand With Crypto Questionnaire, while Al Green is listed as very anti-crypto and has spoken out against it numerous times.
Menefee’s advocacy to take SuperPACs out of Congress is seemingly contradicted by how a pro-cryptocurrency SuperPAC called Protect Progress poured over $4 million into his campaign in things like ads.
Protect Progress is an affiliate of Fair Shake, whose financiers consist of Trump associates and donors, like Coinbase.
Has Menefee ever commented on Palestine?
During his January debate with former councilmember Amanda Edwards, Menefee gave this answer when asked if they were willing to continue funding Israel even after the UN concluded they were committing genocide in Gaza:
What happened in Israel on October 7th was a complete tragedy: thousands killed and folks taken hostage. It was a horrific day, but the killings and the atrocities that we’ve seen in Gaza are wholly unacceptable. Tens of thousands of Palestinian families and kids have been killed, civilians for no reason at all, and for many of them, they’ve been without humanitarian aid, without food, without the ability to survive. Look, what I want is peace now. I want a lasting ceasefire. That means that not a single baby in either Israel or Gaza has to worry about getting bombed. I want to make sure we flood Gaza with humanitarian aid. But most importantly, I want to make sure that this doesn’t happen again, and that means that the US needs to step up and be prepared to use our diplomatic and congressional authority to ensure that any aid that we give to any country doesn’t result in the killing of tens of thousands of innocent lives. I’m committed to making sure that we have real peace in the region, and that means stepping up and being a leader on this issue and being prepared to speak truth when necessary.
Christian Menefee has not yet commented on AIPAC’S endorsement.
